This Isn't Your Grandma's Candy

Image
Before I begin my rant and lose a ton of friends over this next topic, let me just repeat a popular phrase; DON'T SHOOT THE MESSENGER! Because I'm about to touch on a sacred topic. Candy Now, in all honestly, my sacred food is Coffee. I mean seriously, touch my coffee and die. But at least with coffee, I know many people who don't drink it. But, candy? I don't think I know anyone who hates candy. They might be allergic to some of it. They may prefer a darker chocolate over a lighter, milkier chocolate. They may like softer, gummier types of over hard candy. But candy has become a universal staple in our lives. And most people love it.  When I started researching candy production, I went back 50 years because that was right around the time, the make up of most candy started to change.  In the mid 1970's, the average chocolate candy was made with cane sugar, beet sugar and molasses. And man those times were filled with many good candy memories. I remember every year g...

Protecting Our Largest Organ: The Skin

Image
This blog took me days to write because there is just too much information on this topic to share. Half the chemicals in our skin care products I can't even pronounce. And the fact that many of them are toxic, is just abhorrent to me. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. It does so many cool functions from protecting us from physical injury and pathogens, to temperature regulation, to the synthesis of Vitamin D. Our skin is vital to our well-being. And we all have a terrible habit of not treating it with respect.  I've written a few blogs lately about the chemicals in some of our foods and what it does to our bodies. But I haven't yet touched on the chemicals we put on the outside of our bodies and their cumulative effects. If you think about some of the things, that we don't think about, that we do to our skin such as: 1. Using alcohol to stop the spread of germs 2. Swim in a pool of chlorine 3. Sit out in the sun until we burn our skin 4. Cause physical injury t...

The Truth About Bread

Image
Did anyone ever stop to wonder why some breads can sit on our shelves for weeks? If not, I'm one of those weirdos who questioned it. And then I started looking up the most popular brands; Wonder Bread, Sara Lee, Pepperidge Farms, Rustic Oven, Kirkland Signature, Dave's Killer Bread....you name it, I looked into most of it. And here's what I found. Most commercial bread is a cumulation of additives. How it becomes bread, when they are all done making it, has become a mystery to me. Our country has become so big on processed foods, that an item as simple as bread is now no better than that Twinkie you experimented with, by leaving it on your shelf for a few weeks to see if it would decay, when you were 10 years old.  And if you don't know what a Twinkie is, oh boy, I'll share all the fun ingredients of that bad boy another day.  Bread is a common staple all over the world. For over 14,000 years, humans have relied on bread as a source of food. It's cheap, easy to ...

I Accidentally Saved My Dog With Good Food

Image
For the last 10 years, my wife and I have owned a husky who has had a lot of health problems. When he was a baby, we noticed his fur wasn't growing in like a normal husky. It was almost like cotton and his guard hairs never appeared. At 9 months old, he started losing his fur. He would have patches of hair missing all over his body for years. The hair loss started gradually. Mainly around his hindquarters. Then he started losing it along his sides, his tummy, his butt and then finally along his neck.  So when this began, I started researching why this was happening to him. Apparently Northern Dog Breeds can suffer from Zinc deficiency. So when I brought this to my Doctor's attention, she told me to get off the internet and let them figure it out. My vet back then, wasn't familiar with dogs who had zinc deficiencies. So by the time I spent hundreds of dollars on testing, it turns out, he had it. For his whole life he has been on Zinc. But it was never enough. He constantly l...

Avoiding Certain Foods: Coffee Creamer

Image
The other day I was talking with my mom about coffee creamers. My mom and dad use Coffee Mate. And since they will be staying out our house for a bit in the future, I was going to buy them some so they wouldn't have to bring it. As I said in my introduction, my family is riddled with people who have cancer, type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism and so on. So when I read the ingredients in this product, I couldn't believe this garbage is allowed on our grocery shelves. So I did some investigating with the help of one of my most trusted apps, Yuka. I will be mentioning this app a lot. It's my go to for almost everything. When I can't find something on Yuka, I Google it, watch podcasts or find news stories on the products, if there are any. Warning: When you read this you will never come within 50 feet of this garbage ever again. There 4 HIGH RISK additives in this popular Coffee Creamer are: 1. Dipotassium Phosphate: Known to disrupt bone mineralization, has a detrimental eff...

Introduction To My Blog

Image
Introduction Lately, I have wanted to start a Blog on eating healthy and the effects of what not eating healthy does to our bodies. Like many families, ours is plagued with people & pets who have been diagnosed with cancer, hypothyroidism, diabetes and so on. I don't know if many people know this but now in the U.S. alone, over 2 million people each YEAR get diagnosed with cancer and 60% of Females in the U.S. have Hypothyroidism like me. When I researched why so many women suffer from hypothyroidism, I found out that women are more susceptible to autoimmune diseases than men. I'll go into as of why in later blogs. Diabetes has become a straight up plague, effecting over 40 million people in the U.S. today. And one of the problems I see with corporations controlling everything we eat & do nowadays, is they have figured out a cycle. They put poisons in or on our foods and then they develop a medicine to control the problem but never eliminate it. Because it's ho...
